“The production skillfully balanced creative interpretation with respect for the original musical, allowing performers to bring personal expression to their roles while maintaining the show's core essence. “

"A Chorus Line" at Zonnehuis Theatre in Amsterdam, presented by Happily Ever After Productions (HEAP), was an engaging experience on a packed Saturday night. The production skillfully balanced creative interpretation with respect for the original musical, allowing performers to bring personal expression to their roles while maintaining the show's core essence.

The show itself delivers on the promise of an emotional rollercoaster with many strong solos. Eva Kilian (as Cassie) and Mateo Abrahami (as Paul) delivered powerful and raw monologues that brought several in the audience to tears. Alex Mukmanova's (as Diana) beautifully wrapped up the show with  'What I did for love' to a loud applause. Tsnatee Elisa's twist on Connie and Philippe's Bernay's portrayal of Roy provide much needed comic relief. The direction to infuse personal touches to the characters is clear, particularly in moments of humor.

The cast's natural chemistry was evident throughout, as they adeptly navigated the intimate stage space. While there were occasional technical hiccups, the ensemble's professionalism and evident camaraderie carried the show forward. Their genuine enthusiasm is a joy to witness, complemented by a capable live band that provided solid musical accompaniment throughout the 2.5-hour performance. I look forward to the next production of HEAP in Amsterdam.

“…a dazzling showcase brimming with camp, infectious ensemble energy, and just enough ear-worm hits to keep spirits bright.”

As the darker months settle in, the weight of shorter days and longer nights begins to take its toll. In these grey months ahead, what better remedy than a touch of light and sparkle to fend off the winter blues? Happily Ever After’s production of A Chorus Line delivers just that—a dazzling showcase brimming with camp, infectious ensemble energy, and just enough ear-worm hits to keep spirits bright. For those unfamiliar with the legendary musical, A Chorus Line pulls back the curtain on the lives of aspiring performers vying for coveted spots in a chorus line. Though the premise is straightforward, the demands of the show are immense: performers are onstage for nearly the entire two-hour production. Rising to the challenge, the cast delivers with unrelenting energy, tapping, shimmying, sliding, and singing through an impressive series of intricate choreography. Among the stellar ensemble, Evelyn Vermeulen stands out as Val. Her rendition of "Dance Ten, Looks Three" is a joy, blending humour with commanding charisma. With her radiant smile and magnetic stage presence, she effortlessly steals the spotlight, earning her place as a highlight of the show.

Unfortunately, my experience was slightly marred by technical hiccups. Uneven audio levels left some performers struggling to project, which dulled the impact of a few scenes. While the campy tone was expertly delivered, moments of emotional depth didn’t always resonate as strongly as they could have. Still, A Chorus Line remains a vibrant, feel-good romp bursting with colorful costumes, toe-tapping tunes, and an array of engaging characters. The production shines brightest when the entire cast takes the stage, offering audiences a feast of small, delightful details—from hidden rivalries to playful missteps—that enrich the experience. These nuances elevate the ensemble, underscoring the heartfelt core of the show. Ultimately, A Chorus Line is a spirited escape, perfect for musical theatre fans or anyone seeking a burst of joy to brighten the colder months. With its passionate performances and exuberant energy, this production is here to warm even the chilliest of days.
